BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA – where art and innovation converge

I had the exclusive opportunity for ellectric to witness a remarkable fusion of artistry and innovation before yesterday’s unveiling at Frieze Los Angeles – the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. 
It’s more than just a car – it's where the pioneering spirit of BMW meets the creative ingenuity of South African artist Esther Mahlangu. The BMW i5 Flow isn't just a testament to cutting-edge design; it's a canvas that comes alive. With its colour-change technology, the i5 Flow NOSTOKANA captures the vibrant essence of Mahlangu’s Ndebele heritage, right down to the vehicle's very soul. I had the pleasure to engage with Stella Clarke, the engineer behind BMW's E-Ink technology, who shared her insights into the conception and realisation of this project. The i5 Flow NOSTOKANA is adorned with electronically animated film sections that create a dynamic artwork on wheels. But the innovation doesn't stop there. Renzo Vitale, BMW Group's Creative Director of Sound, has concocted an immersive sound experience that harmonises the BMW ethos with the rhythmic heart of Ndebele culture. Utilising Mahlangu's voice, the ambient noise of her painting tools, and even the soft scratch of colour pencils in the BMW design studio, Vitale has crafted an auditory landscape that moves in sync with the visual spectacle.
